The origin of glass and Venice

Venice has been a very powerful empire for many centuries, and discovers from Asia Minor an extraordinary art, that of glass making, which will be jealously guarded for many centuries to come. Venice builds the first industrial district in the world in 1291, Murano, the cradle of art glass in the world, imposing strict rules and great privileges to the holders of this art, like to the Seguso family whose first document dates back to May 3, 1397.

THE HISTORY OF MURANO

Murano holds an extraordinary history, just think that glass was known to very few people in the world until 500 years ago. Tableware, mirrors, chandeliers, the windows and even glasses-with telescope research from Galileo Galilei’s made in Murano in 1606. Everything is discovered on this small island in the Venice lagoon. This is the contribution Murano makes to humanity. The Serenissima Republic of Venice sanctioned by law the birth of Murano as a glass island in 1291, since then the families working there have been the holders of unique knowledge and extraordinary secrets. With The Golden Book of the guild of arts and crafts of the Venetian republic, a number of Murano families are given noble titles including the Seguso family, which still owns the family crest, representing a ladder, the world and the cross ( hard work, success and God blessing ). In 1900 the extraordinary evolution of modern glass, with Antonio Seguso in 1933 and Seguso Vetri d`Arte, so his son Archimede and then his son Giampaolo. Today Pierpaolo, Giampaolo`s son, share the stories of many of these works on this site, collecting an extraordinary selection of curated objects from different historical periods.

The Seguso family has a unique history, with twenty-three generations of artists, craftsmen, entrepreneurs, designers and glassmakers. They have always been dedicated to this art and their island. A history full of passion and discovery. Linked to the succession of events, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance to the world wars. The constant and innovative research is a rich heritage of drawings, sketches and objects that are part of the Seguso heritage that continues, guarded and preserved in more than 100 museums, as well as by many private collectors, all over the world. The secrets, colors, and techniques handed down from father to son, generation after generation, are still central to the family tradition. The Seguso family is always intent on the pursuit of quality and beauty, with a constant and relentless attention to detail to create the most extraordinary works in glass. Today with this site we want to give space to some of the most extraordinary and rare objects.
